Vinincunca Rainbow Mountain

This natural attraction, the famous colorful mountain also called the rainbow mountain, in recent years has become the second most important attraction after Machu Picchu. La montaña de colores de Vinincunca está ubicado a 5100 m.s.n.m. (16732 pies) a unos 100 kilómetros de la ciudad del Cusco. Este atractivo natural se formó hace más de 60 millones de años a través de un proceso de meteorización causado por los agentes de la naturaleza el viento, el agua, el hielo, las plantas, la gravedad y los cambios de temperatura hicieron que los materiales transportados se depositen en cuencas sedimentarias, la mezcla de distintos materiales para posteriormente ser compactados formando sedimentos.

Durante el proceso geológico de subducción entre las placas de nazca y americana, todos estos materiales fueron expulsados al exterior formando la cadena montañosa de los andes de América del Sur, así mismo, en la cordillera del Vilcanota se encuentran varias montañas de colores con la misma sedimentación. Las diferentes coloraciones se deben a la mezcla de varios materiales, así como:

  • El color rosado es por la arcilla roja, fangolitas (fango) y argelitas (arena).
  • El blanquecino por la arenisca cuarzosa color blanco.
  • Los pardos, marrones y morados por limonitas y margas, ricos en carbonato de calcio.
  • El rojo está compuesto por las arcilitas (hierro) y arcillas pertenecientes al terciario superior.
  • El verde se debe al compuesto de filitas y arcillas ricas en ferro magnesiano.
  • El pardo terroso es producto del fanglomerado compuesto por roca con manganeso perteneciente a la era cuaternaria.
  • Y el color amarillo mostaza por las areniscas calcáreas ricas en minerales sulfurados.

Rainbow Mountain Tour Peru | Full-Day Vinicunca Experience

  • The excursion starts with the pick up from the hotel between 4:00 to 4:30 AM, in the tourist transport we will go to the southeast of Cusco.
  • The trip will be 1 hour and 30 minutes to the village of Cusipata for breakfast.
  • The second part of the trip in our mobility will be 1 hour more to 4600 m.a.s.l. (15092 feet), the beginning of the trek.
  • After a briefing by our professional guide, we start the trek.
  • Hiking time is from 1 hour and a half to 2 hours depending on the pace of each person.
  • There are 5 kilometers of distance, the first part is flat and then slightly uphill to the mountain itself.
  • Optionally you can rent horses for people who do not wish to walk (Horse rental with additional price of (USD $ 30.00).
  • The time spent on the mountain and the viewpoint is depending on the weather. Of course you will have enough time to take pictures and enjoy the atmosphere of the place.
  • The option to visit the red valley is previous coordination with the guide, this will depend on your physical condition.
  • The return is by the same road for approximately one hour to the parking lot.
  • The return trip in the unit is one hour to the restaurant for lunch buffet.
  • Finally, the return to Cusco is 1 hour and 30 minutes.
  • Arrival time will be between 4 to 5 pm approximately.
