The option of visiting Humantay Lagoon is a must-have for your travel plans, whether on a day trip or during the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu.
It simply amazes every visitor from the beginning of the hike with the views of Apu Salkantay Mountain and Humantay itself. Reaching the lagoon is more than just a satisfying experience, the enchanting beauty of the turquoise color and the glacier in the background create incomparable views.

La laguna Humantay de origen glacial está ubicado a 120 kilómetros al noroeste de Cusco en la cordillera de Vilcanota. La laguna está situado a una altura de 4320 m.s.n.m. (14173 pies) en las faldas de la montaña Humantay y tiene una altura de 5450 m.s.n.m. (17880 pies). Durante el trekking de Salkantay a Machu Picchu del primer día en la tarde se realizaba las visitas a la laguna a modo de aclimatarse para pasar el abra de Salkantay en el segundo día.
En los últimos años se hizo popular la excursión de un día exclusivamente para visitar la laguna Humantay, causa admiración por los colores variables que presenta durante la época del año. En mayor tiempo predomina el color turquesa debido a que el agua en su estado puro no tiene un color pero presenta colores a la luz del sol y estas son ondas electromagnéticas compuesta por casi todas las frecuencias del espectro visible, aunque no lo parezca un rayo de sol contiene todos los colores de un arcoíris. La luz atraviesa el agua, ésta absorbe del espectro electromagnético las radiaciones correspondientes a la luz roja, por tanto, la luz que la atraviesa la vemos como azul (que es el color complementario al rojo). El agua absorbe principalmente los colores más débiles que por ejemplo son el color rojo y el naranja, mientras que los azules y verdes son transmitidos íntegramente. En conclusión, el color turquesa se muestra porque la luz que se refleja en el agua son una mezcla de los espectros de colores azul y tonalidades rojas que formarían el color turquesa.

Cusco → Mollepata → Soraypampa → HumantayHumantay Lake Tour: Full-Day Trekking Experience with Qatawi Tours Perú
- The excursion begins with the pick up from the hotel at 4:30 AM and with our tourist transport we will go to the town of Mollepata, 2 hours of trip.
- In Mollepata we will have a buffet breakfast and then continue the trip in the unit.
- The second part of the trip is by trail for another hour to Soraypampa, located at 3900 meters above sea level (12795 feet), where the hike begins.
- After receiving the indications from our professional guide, we start walking.
- The hiking distance is 4 kilometers with a duration of 1 hour and a half.
- The first part is gentle and gradually begins the ascent to the lagoon.
- (You also have the option of renting horses just for the ascent for an additional cost of S/. 90.00 soles or USD $ 25.00).
- Once you arrive at the Humantay lagoon, you will have flexible time to take pictures and then explanations from the guide.
- The way back is very gentle downhill and the last part is flat until the parking of the cars.
- One hour drive back to Mollepata for lunch.
- Finally, the trip to Cusco will be 2 hours and we will arrive approximately at 5:00 PM.
